Here is another conservative Zinger from Mike Huckabee

f the Democrats want to insult the women of America by making them believe that they are helpless without Uncle Sugar coming in and providing for them a prescription each month for birth control because they cannot control their libido or their reproductive system without the help of the government, then so be it, let’s take that discussion all across America because women are far more than Democrats have made them to be.”

I think that Huckabee is stating that he does not want the government to promote a social policy that his religion considers to be immoral. In reality, Huckabee is failing to understand that he should not be extending remarks regarding policy that imposes religious values beyond his faith community.  In his faith community, God tells people if they want to live a spiritually fulfilling life that they should follow God’s rule on sexual health.  For a Christian, it is a akin to Islamic women wearing the hijab or not drinking alcohol.  It is vital part of that faith’s community to follow the rules as place by that faith tradition to ensure that the person can fully developed a spiritual relationship from their faith community as they see understand God.

However, trying to impose that value system on a broader swath of society who does not follow your faith communities moral system or has no interest to do so does not make good public policy especially for health related issues.  Contraception s not designed for people to have sexual liberation, but rather to prevent unnecessary pregnancies without resorting to abortion of convenience.  One can argue that abortion of convenience is a conscious choice of individual and can be seen as very selfish and immoral decision, but argue for full contraception  in order to prevent abortions of convenience.

Such a policy really lacks of proper critical analysis.  If your real goal is prevent abortion of convenience, than one should fully support the idea of contraception as sound public policy.  Even if you belong to Quiverful movement where women voluntary do not use birth control as expression of faith towards to God, you should still not apply your belief system on the rest of general society. Opposing abortion is okay with me especially if it is abortion of pure convenience (However, I strongly oppose any attempt GOP attempts to restrict unconditional access to abortion on under any condition).

I think this statement is long line of GOP leaders who fail to understand the fine line of what is considered to be moral principle in one’s faith tradition, but then try to apply it to a general society where your faith tradition’s spiritual values have little applications towards. If the GOP leaders want to win election, they should start making judgements based on public policy and reason instead of speaking from a very narrow reading of biblical texts.
