The Winter Blues

Today, I learned something interesting today.  I learned about Seasoned Affective Disorder which is disorder that makes people have the winter blues.

According to the Daily Mail, Seasonal Affective Disorder is a combination of depression and fatigue caused by lack of the light.   In sunny California, I think it would be hard to get this bleak disorder but in England or Buffalo (which I will visit next year),  people will tend to get it.

The Daily Mail describes the cause in this following excerpt

“The theory is that winter light makes our brains produce more of the sleep hormone melatonin and less mood-boosting serotonin. Using a light box or lamp is said to ‘reset’ the balance”

However, a doctor in Norway is claiming to challenge the idea of the “Winter Blues”.  He states in the article

“: ‘If you were going to find SAD anywhere, it would be here in Norway, where we have no sun for two months of the year.

‘Yet, when we analysed 8,000 people in Tromso, we found no correlation between depressive symptoms and the amount of light. The winter here is a great time – there’s lots of socialising.’ ”

The articles goes on to state that SAD could be an product of overactive imagination

What Rosenthal found, Hansen claims, was not a new syndrome but a pool of unhappy people. Studies have found that people who suffer from SAD tend to be unconventional, imaginative and curious. They are also heavy users of medical and psychiatric services.

‘These are patients who suffer from a lot of physical and psychological symptoms,’ says Hansen. ‘SAD provides an explanation for why they don’t feel well. There is little evidence that this is caused by lack of daylight”

Hmm. Do I have SAD no?  I usually like when it gets cold.  It is the time of the NFL playoffs, bowl games, the Lakers are playing in full swing, I can run at any time of day, and of course there is the NHL.  And there is course Fuego Del Eterno.

Where do you find SAD in the United States? Seattle, Buffalo, Chicago, Detroit (yeah, Detriot).  Any place that is real cold, snowy, or rainy.

But you now will not find it sunny Southern California where we can snowboard or surf all in one day.

I know people including myself that go to tanning beds in the winter because of the lack of sun and it’s warmth. I feel better and bonus, I’m tan year round in Colorado.
